The Challenge
Kijiji gave us 24 hours to create a feature or tool that supports local sellers on their platform.
Getting to Know Kijiji
Kijiji is one of the top recommerce marketplaces in Canada, with over 238 million visits per month.
Kijiji allows users to sell a huge variety of products ranging from electronics to automobiles.
Getting to Know the Sellers
In order to come up with a feature or tool that could support sellers on Kijiji, we needed to better understand the pain points that sellers go through when selling an item on Kijiji. Due to short time constraints, we immediately called and interviewed some of our friends and family who have had experience selling on Kijiji. We came up with an interview guide to conduct non-bias interviews.
We then collected key data points, distinguishing pain points, behaviours, and motivations.
This allowed us to produce an affinity map, defining the key themes we found from our data points. These were the themes we found:
Negotiating Pricing
Outdated Marketplace
Communication Difficulties
Trust and Security
The theme of Trust and Security brought forth the most pain points for the interviewees, which is why we decided to focus on a solution that would target this problem.
Finding a Solution with an Agile Team
Based on these findings, we needed to come up with a solution that would solve the primary issue of trust and security sellers faced on Kijiji in a short amount of time. My team decided to conduct a brainstorming session to come up with as many solutions as possible.
Because this was not only a design challenge, but also a data analysis and software engineering challenge, my team decided to come up with a feature that would flag suspicious buyers to the sellers using a Random Forest Classifier Model.
We would temporarily use the messages from the chat to sort whether the buyer qualifies to be flagged as a suspicious user based on previous chat history and success with previous purchases.
Designing a Solution
Although we were short on time, we decided to quickly design some mid-fidelity wireframes in order to ensure everyone was on the same page before designing the high fidelity designs.
High Fidelity Design
After a lot of coffee and not much sleep, I designed the high fidelity designs to be handed off to the developers the next morning.
